FDA Approves Transitional Contact Lens

Orange County, CA - April 20th, 2018 -

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first transitional contact lens to help protect eyes from damaging ultra-violet light. This new development helps the human eye manage different types of light and different intensities of brightness throughout the day.

This light-adaptive technology is very similar to the technology found in transitional eyeglasses. However, they aren’t as accommodating, and can easily be broken.  The lens gets darker in response to bright light and blocks UV light altogether.

The lenses contain an additive that adapts to the amount of light filtered to the eye based on the amount of ultra-violet light to which they are exposed. This brings out a darkened lens in bright light that automatically returns to an ordinary tint when visible to natural or dark lighting. “This contact lens is the first of its kind to incorporate the same technology that is used in eyeglasses that automatically darken in the sun,” said Malvina Eydelman director of the Division of Ophthalmic and Ear, Nose & Throat Devices

It has taken over a decade and thousands of patients partaking in clinical trials to achieve the 510(k) clearance from the FDA. "This innovation was born out of deep research into consumer lifestyle needs and fits our future-forward approach to caring for human sight," said Dr. Xiao-Yu Song, Global Head of R&D for Johnson & Johnson Vision.

These soft lenses are intended for day-to-day use for the treatment of Myopia (nearsightedness) or Hyperopia (farsightedness) without having to bring sunglasses with them when outdoors. It is recommended for daily wear for up to 14 days and gives you the benefits of clear lenses indoors and at night.

Contrary to other breakthroughs in research and development, Johnson & Johnson Vision with ACUVUE OASYS® is pleased to announce that the transition contacts will go on sale at the beginning of the year 2019.
