What Can No Alcohol Do For Your Body

Orange County, CA - September 12th, 2018 -   Sober September is the counterpart of Dry January. It offers a chance for a fresh healthy start of not consuming alcohol for 30 days. Dry January is the start of the New Year, where Sober September is the beginning of returning to routines from a long lazy summer.

According to the “Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2015-2020,” U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and U.S. Department of Agriculture, moderate drinking is up to 1 drink per day for women, and up to 2 drinks per day for men. Whether you are a light to moderate drinker, alcohol takes a serious toll on your health. Alcohol affects your heart, liver, pancreas, and weakens your immune system. It also interferes with the brain’s communication pathways and can affect the way the brain looks and works. According to the most recent data from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), approximately 30 percent of people age 18 and older stated that they engaged in binge drinking in the past month.

Joining the Sober September challenge doesn’t possess a health risk unless you're a really heavy drinker and in danger of withdrawals. There has been limited research on how quitting alcohol for a month affects your body, but a few studies have shown psychological and health benefits.

What Can No Alcohol Do For Your Body

In 2013, researchers at the Institute for Liver and Digestive Health at the University College London Medical School teamed up with 14 staff members at the magazine “New Scientist” to examine the benefits of Dry January. The staff members, who consider themselves as regular drinkers, were subjected to baseline testing with blood samples, liver ultrasound scans, and questionnaires; for a total of 5 weeks. 10 of the participants stopped drinking alcohol completely, and four drank their normal amounts.

The four staff members who kept drinking saw no benefit. The people who quit had lower levels of liver fat (which can be a precursor to liver damage), improved blood sugars and lower cholesterol than they did at the beginning of the month. They also reported improved sleep and concentration.

The University of Sussex reported that 2014 Dry January participants in the United Kingdom had several other benefits. 79 percent saved money, 62 percent had better sleep, 82 percent felt a sense of achievement, 62 percent had more energy, and 49 percent lost weight.

Another study done in the United Kingdom in 2015 reported that participants of Dry January often had fewer drinks when they did drink, better able to refuse alcoholic drinks,  and were drunk less often six months after Dry January was completed.

People who consume more than a moderate amount of alcohol are at a higher risk of many medical conditions, and possibly death. The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) is a great source for information and support.
