Previously Missed Human Organ Discovered

Orange County, CA - June 22nd, 2018 -  According to a recent study published in Scientific Reports, scientists are able to view living tissue more clearly on a microscopic scale. Scientists have consistently believed that the connective tissue surrounding our organs was a thick and compact layer. However, in a routine endoscopy, medics Dr. David Carr-Locke and Dr. Petros Benias of Mount Sinai Beth Israel Medical Center discovered a possibly new organ while investigating a patient’s bile duct when searching for signs of cancer.

Researchers say the reason this new organ has gone unnoticed is due to the way tissue is examined. When viewing human tissue outside a living body, the layer appears to be thick and compact; when viewed inside a living body, the connective tissue layer is a fluid-filled compartment that’s strung together in a web of collagen and flexible protein.

“This fixation artifact of collapse has made a fluid-filled tissue type throughout the body appear solid in biopsy slides for decades, and our results correct for this to expand the anatomy of most tissues,” said study author and pathologist Neil Theise.

They are calling the newly found organ “Interstitium.” It’s virtually everywhere, just below the surface of the skin. It surrounds our veins and arteries, lines our lungs, urinary systems, and digestive tracts, and it also cases the fibrous tissue between our muscles.

The Interstitium isn’t only the space between cells. Theise and his colleagues believe it should be reclassified as a true organ due to its rare structure and properties. Theise stated that it’s "highly specific and dependent on the unique structures

When Dr. Theise and his team observed the samples taken from patients with invasive cancers, they discovered cancer cells that worked their way out of their original tissues, and then found their way into these channels; which then directed them straight to the lymphatic system. “Once they get in, it’s like they’re on a water slide. We have a new window on the mechanism of tumor spread. There's always going to be stuff we haven't seen before that we don't know. I'm awestruck that nature is more complicated than we allow ourselves to think.” says Theise.

While this discovery is fascinating, it will need to be discussed and confirmed by other researchers before the “Interstitium” is labeled as a new organ. Currently, researchers are trying to evaluate the functions and structures of the cells with their new found discovery
