Faster MRI Scan Times Could Save Hospitals Thousands

Orange County, CA - June 8th, 2018 -  Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive medical test that uses a powerful magnetic field, radio waves and a computer to produce detailed pictures of the inside of the body. The MRI helps diagnose or monitor treatment for a variety of conditions within the chest, abdomen, and pelvis.

The scan can take between 15 minutes to over an hour to complete. This depends on the part of the body being imaged and what type of MRI is required to show the information. The patient must hold very still, any movement would result in blurred images. Certain patients are more likely to move during the scan, such as children or patients who are claustrophobic. Typically, scans that are shorter in time means less movement and a better patient experience.

As stated in a study published in the July 2015 issue of The Journal of the American College of Radiology, having to retake MRI scans due to patient motion, can cost a hospital upward of $100,000 in lost annual revenue. Speeding up the process of completing a scan would not only decrease the cost and the need for repeat scans; it will increase efficacy and improve patient comfort, and satisfaction.

Scanner productivity and the total amount of procedures performed have become progressively important.  Shorter scan times increase the number of potential scans per day which would lower the cost per scan. MRI scan times have an increasingly essential role in today's clinical practice.

A new technology named iQMR (intelligent Quick MR) by Medic Vision Imaging Solutions Ltd in Israel has been cleared by the FDA. This iterative image reconstruction technology enhances noisy MRI scans and significantly increases the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). iQMR supports MRI scanners of all vendors and models, and the capabilities enable the use of short MRI protocols and allow increased productivity, fewer repeating scans, and a better patient experience.
