Can Small Daily Improvements to Bad Habits Make Your Day Better?

Orange County, CA - June 19th, 2018 -  Changing just one percent of your bad habits and behavior could change the quality of your everyday life. The small “one percent” may not seem like much, but it may have a greater overall impact than what you’d expect.

Marginal Gains Philosophy – Improving everything in your life by one percent. It’s easy to overestimate the importance of one defining moment and underestimate the value of making better decisions on a daily basis. Almost every good or bad habit you have is the result of many small decisions over time.

Dave Brailsford is a former British cycling coach and a firm believer in marginal gains. He is responsible for taking the British Cycling Federation from 2 bronze medals at the 1984 Atlanta Olympics, to 8 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze medals at London in 2012. He increased everything from the rider’s nutrition to the way the riders washed their hands to avoid infection. Brailsford’s team was the strongest in the world, with Sir Bradley Wiggins becoming the first British cyclist to win the Tour de France, and the British Cycling Team sweeping up 70% of the gold medals available at the Olympics that year by 2012.

"The whole principle came from the idea that if you broke down everything you could think of that goes into riding a bike, and then improved it by one percent; you will get a significant increase when you put them all together,” says Brailsford to the BBC.

The following examples are great ways to make the BAD brain days to GOOD brain days, every day.

Can Small Daily Improvements to Bad Habits Make Your Day Better?

  • Research shows that getting between seven and nine hours of sleep per night is optimal for adults. Each hour of sleep that is lost, can affect the next day. However, sleeping more than nine hours has also been linked to diabetes, headaches, and weight gain.
  • Stretching boosts blood flow to your muscles and your brain, improving the accuracy of working memory and inhibitory control. In a study, subjects who participated in yoga for 20 minutes a day showed dramatic improvements.
  • In a study, green tea extract has proven brain health benefits. It improves memory and brain cell growth, with improvement in task performance.
  • Research finds carbohydrates could increase the risk of depression. Eating a balanced breakfast that contains a mixture of lean protein and good fats, will give you sustained energy throughout the day.
